Danny Meyer-Hospitality Rules

I am a big fan of Danny Meyer as just about anyone who has dined at one of his restaurants tends to be.  I consider all his books as must-reads and try to watch every time he is interviewed because I always learn something new.  If you don’t know him, read the following bio that touches on just a few of his accomplishments.  I will highlight some of his hospitality philosophy over the next year with some key points he shares and with any luck we might be able to interview a current or former stakeholder for our youtube channel.

Danny Meyer is a renowned American restaurateur and hospitality entrepreneur, best known as the founder of Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG). Born on March 14, 1958, in St. Louis, Missouri, Danny Meyer has made an indelible mark on the culinary industry through his innovative approach to hospitality.

After graduating from Trinity College in 1980, Meyer began his career in hospitality by opening a small restaurant called Union Square Cafe in New York City’s Union Square neighborhood in 1985. The restaurant quickly gained acclaim for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, exceptional service, and delicious cuisine, becoming a beloved institution in the city.

Building upon the success of Union Square Cafe, Meyer went on to establish Union Square Hospitality Group in 1987, a company dedicated to creating and managing some of the most iconic and influential restaurants in the United States. Under his leadership, USHG expanded its portfolio to include renowned establishments such as Gramercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park, Shake Shack, Blue Smoke, and The Modern.

Meyer’s philosophy of “enlightened hospitality” became the cornerstone of his success. He believes that the key to a truly exceptional dining experience lies in the quality of the food and the way guests are treated. Meyer emphasizes the importance of genuine care and attention to detail, fostering a culture of hospitality that extends beyond the dining room to the entire organization.

In addition to his role as a restaurateur, Danny Meyer is an author and sought-after speaker, sharing his insights on hospitality and leadership with audiences worldwide. He has penned several influential books, including “Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business” and “The Union Square Cafe Cookbook.”

He has been named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” and received the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Restaurateur award. His innovative concepts and commitment to excellence have not only shaped the way restaurants operate but have also inspired a new generation of hospitality professionals.

Danny Meyer’s legacy as the founder of Union Square Hospitality Group continues to thrive, and his impact on the hospitality industry remains significant.
